The Aim Of The Collection

The aim of this collection is to introduce the QCA Study Unit 5 Geography. Its purpose is to enable children, through their personal involvement, to learn about other countries and places through a first hand object, namely Weatherby the teddy bear, and introduce them to some geographical terms and skills.

Contents Of The Weatherby Packs

This pack contains Weatherby the Bear, many different clothing outfits and accessories for the different climates he will meet and evidence of some of the places that Weatherby has been already. Locate the places on a map and consider how he travelled there, what clothes he would have needed for the differing climates and what he would have seen in those places.

How Do You Use Them?

Organise for Weatherby Bear to be taken with children, staff and any members of the school community when they visit different places. He will need suitable clothing for his trip, depending on the climate of the place he is to visit and possibly a passport. Discuss all these points thoroughly and make sure he has everything he needs before his departure. Encourage him to send postcards of the place back to the children, to take photographs and to have his photo taken while he is there.

On his return create a display in the classroom using souvenirs, books, pictures, coins, postcards, flags, newspapers etc. Use speech bubbles in Weatherby Bear's words as simple labels e.g. "It was very hot. I was glad I had my hat. I put my sun cream on. Can you see me in the photograph? I rode on a camel. The aeroplane went over the mountains."
